The Sky is Blue
The Fields are Yellow

Documentary - In production

The Sky is Blue, The Fields are Yellow is a film project looking at the war in Ukraine; before, during, and eventually after. It is a story told through the eyes of 10 people with additional contributions from others met along the way. It’s stressful, tragic, darkly funny at times, real and most importantly; relatable at a human level.

At the start of February 2022, the world began talking about the potential of war, yet few, myself included, believed a full-scale invasion would happen. Many believed the media was whipping up a terrifying storm of something too improbable to comprehend. So it was in that context, I ventured out to Kyiv and sat down with ten people from various walks of life to discuss what they thought of the situation and its potential to escalate.

By the 24th of February, everything had changed. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. My affection for this country and its people, stemming from my relationships with family and friends was brought into sharp focus and a short story about inflammatory media rhetoric turned into a far more important project to the world and to myself. One that will continue to follow the lives and perspectives of the ten principle people as they navigate their country, now at war.

Since those first interviews before the war began, I have returned to Ukraine, most recently in late May, to follow those who have remained in Kyiv, alongside other locals. The film tracks the changes and permanent scars that this war has left on the lives of a diverse cast of ordinary citizens. Take Yana, previously apolitical, who has found her voice and identity as a Ukrainian and now speaks out passionately against Russian aggression. Or Markiyan, who went from his reporting duties as a journalist to joining the army on the front line.

This film captures history in the making and events that will have lasting ripple effects on us all, no matter where in the world. It is stressful, tragic, darkly funny at times, real and, most importantly, relatable on a human level, pulling into sharp focus a situation which, as felt by those in Ukraine, is dropping off the front pages as international attention begins to lag. This film is one that puts Ukrainian people front and centre, offering an on-the-ground perspective of one of the most critical conflicts of our time.
